Kusadasi is in full bloom this first week of May. The hillsides are covered in wildflowers and the air carries a hint of jasmine from the garden terraces. It is that perfect window where the Aegean sun is warm enough for a seaside lunch but gentle enough for a long hike through the ruins of Ephesus. While the town is bustling with the first major wave of spring cruise arrivals, the atmosphere remains relaxed and the local pace is still wonderfully unhurried.

Of course, the local conversation remains dominated by the recent arrest of our mayor, Ömer Günel. It seems the "independent" judiciary has been very busy lately, ensuring that the CHP opposition is well represented behind bars rather than in their offices. Following the path of Istanbul Mayor Ekrem İmamoğlu, our local leadership has been traded for court appointed trustees in a move that surely has nothing to do with political strategy. We are all deeply touched by the European Union's thunderous silence on the matter. Their selective concern for democracy is truly a masterclass in diplomatic restraint, proving once again that as long as the cruise ships keep docking and the beaches stay open, the finer points of local governance are merely optional. We look forward to seeing which opposition figure wins the next all expenses paid trip to Silivri prison.
