Welcome to Kusadasi
Kusadasi is in full bloom this first week of May. The hillsides are covered in wildflowers and the air carries a hint of jasmine from the garden terraces. It is that perfect window where the Aegean sun is warm enough for a seaside lunch but gentle enough for a long hike through the ruins of Ephesus. While the town is bustling with the first major wave of spring cruise arrivals, the atmosphere remains relaxed and the local pace is still wonderfully unhurried.
Of course, the local conversation remains dominated by the recent arrest of our mayor, Ömer Günel. It seems the "independent" judiciary has been very busy lately, ensuring that the CHP opposition is well represented behind bars rather than in their offices. Following the path of Istanbul Mayor Ekrem İmamoğlu, our local leadership has been traded for court appointed trustees in a move that surely has nothing to do with political strategy. We are all deeply touched by the European Union's thunderous silence on the matter. Their selective concern for democracy is truly a masterclass in diplomatic restraint, proving once again that as long as the cruise ships keep docking and the beaches stay open, the finer points of local governance are merely optional. We look forward to seeing which opposition figure wins the next all expenses paid trip to Silivri prison.

This Week in Kusadasi
What's Happening: The high season is officially underway. Most beach clubs and seasonal restaurants have now fully opened their terraces. While there are no major national holidays this week, the town is preparing for the upcoming Youth and Sports Day on May 19. Visitors will notice increased activity around the marina as local boat tours begin their daily schedules to the nearby bays.
Turkey Travel Update: The Turkish Lira continues its controlled devaluation, currently trading at approximately 45.17 TRY to the US Dollar and 53.40 TRY to the Euro. Tourism remains a primary focus for the economy, so expect smooth operations at all major transit hubs. No new visa restrictions have been announced for the 2026 season for major European or North American travelers.
Port & Cruise News: Ege Port Kusadasi has completed its latest phase of solar energy integration, making it one of the greenest terminals in the Mediterranean. For those with a short layover, the Grand Bazaar and the historic Caravanserai are within a five minute walk of the terminal exit. If you have at least six hours, a private tour to Ephesus is the gold standard for shore excursions. Link to the full cruise schedule and cruise passenger guide.
Where to Eat This Week
The theme for this week is the Turkish Breakfast, a legendary spread of local flavors that is best enjoyed at a leisurely pace.
- Historic Cinaralti Breakfast House - Old Town. Order the traditional village breakfast to enjoy under the massive, century old plane tree that gives this local favorite its name.
- Bayraktepe Kahvaltıevi - Bayraktepe Hill. This is the hidden gem for those who want an extensive spread of homemade jams and fresh cheeses paired with a spectacular panoramic view of the harbor.
- Sultan Sofrası Vadi - Kirazlı Village. Located a short drive inland, this spot offers an authentic farm to table experience in a relaxed valley setting that feels worlds away from the city center.
